Passion, Pain, and Pleasure. What do you think of when you hear those three words? Mixed feelings, hunh. Exactly how I felt when I listened to Trey’s new album, Passion, Pain, and Pleasure. When I made the decision to review this album I had to force myself to be open minded. Reason being is because I feel like every other artist is putting out the same ole product. Here’s what I came up with…
I could do the track by track review but this album is too long for all that. I had to approach this review differently. I listened to the album on shuffle first and then took the ride the producers planned by listening to the album in track listing order. I can say Songz was conservative yet playful, liberal yet stiff. He doesn’t hit the middle of the road with this album. You’re either gonna love it or hate it. Can you be in between? Sure. Just make sure you go find your man card or sisterhood on the way out my door. He goes all the way on some songs and others I feel like he ran through me with no Vaseline. He didn’t even bother to hit my behind on the way out.
The album produced mostly by Troy Taylor, Songz’ mentor. He helped write the lyrics as well. If you were a fan of Trey’s I Gotta Make It, then you’ll be good with this album. I’m not a big fan of the album but there are so many songs on this joint where potential is just waiting for Songz to grab but it’s out of reach. Every song I like on this album was produced by the likes of Kane Beatz, Eric Hudson, Andrew Clifton, and Bei Maejor. They were able to create the best mixture of sounds and words to win me over and if you know me, I’m a big fan of the old school equation of music: Sounds + Beats + Lyrics² = Hit
Trey Songz has a name and he lives up to it in his own little way but like I said, this is an album for the right wing conservatives or the left-wing liberals. The score is right in the middle but I’m sure you will stand clearly on one side or the other depending on what you think of this style of music. His talent is for those of you who enjoy listening to music from an artist who doesn’t want to be forgotten about. And it’s maybe not high on the list for those of us that appreciate a more traditional musical experience.
