I know, it’s killing me to. There are two things that happen right after the new year, you either get albums that were pushed back most of the previous year, or albums that were scheduled are pushed back so you get nothing. We’re dealing with the latter right now and that’s kind of good. It provides us with time to go back and catch up on albums that we missed or appreciate music from artists we really like. Now while all that is good and dandy, Corinne Bailey Rae (CBR) decided to take this time to give us a treat. The Love EP consists of covers of 5 love songs from pop, rock, and even reggae.
I’m not going to front and say that I knew all the songs she selected to cover, but upon hearing her version, I promptly found the originals and did comparisons. Her version is an upgrade on most every one. Two covers that I did know off top and were surprised to hear were “I Wanna Be Your Lover” and “Is This Love.” The previous song was originally done by Prince. Now, we all know Prince is fiercely protective of his work so I was shocked to see her get this done. It’s a pretty good version that manages to stay true to the time period of the original with full synth and soft drums in tow. The other is the Bob Marley classic that is as close to the original as Kenny Rogers is to Hip Hop. However, please forgive me, as I say I like her version better. It’s been slowed down and souled up as only CBR can do.
I’ll save the other 3 songs for you to enjoy as this is a definite album to purchase to add to your CBR collection
